In a bid to address pressing social issues affecting young people, the management of Nakore-Chansa M/A Junior High School in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region of Ghana welcomed representatives from MAGVIN Research Institute, Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI) and CAMFED-Ghana for an informative talk on the causes and effects of teenage pregnancy and Child, Early and Forced Marriages in Nakore, a community within the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region of Ghana. The session, organized by MAGVIN Research Institute, saw the Director of Operations who doubles as a YALI alumnus; Mr Magnus Balanoe Sunnabuo, and the Director of Research and Development; Mr Vincent Buobodaare Dari, engage with learners and facilitators highlighting the causes and effects of teenage pregnancy and Child, Early and Forced Marriages.
Mr. Magnus commenced the discussion by explaining the concept of teenage pregnancy and early marriages, emphasizing their significance and prevalence in the Nakore community. He delved into the causes of teenage pregnancy and Child, Early, and Forced Marriages, citing factors such as lack of education, poverty, cultural norms, and inadequate access to reproductive health education and services within the Wa municipality of the Upper West Region. Magnus noted that teenage pregnancy and Child, Early, and Forced Marriages are intertwined and reinforce one another. Following Mr. Magnus’s presentation, Mr. Vincent elaborated on the far-reaching consequences of early marriages and teenage pregnancy. He underscored the detrimental effects teenage pregnancy and Child, Early and Forced Marriages have on the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of victims. He added that teenage pregnancy and Child, Early, and Forced Marriages have broader societal implications. Additionally, Mr Vincent outlined measures and interventions such as continuous sexual and reproductive health education, school enrollment retention, community engagements on the topic, and advocacy for policy reform among others which he believes could help reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancy and Child, Early and Forced Marriages and its accompanying consequences on the victims and the society at large. The other YALI alumnus and CAMFED-Ghana representative also shared their thoughts on the subject matter.
After the sensitization, the team from MAGVIN Research Institute presented a token of stationery to the school to support the teaching and learning of students. The donation was received by the headmistress of the school on behalf of the school management. These resources are intended to enhance the student’s understanding of the topics discussed and foster continued learning and awareness.
The event concluded with an interactive session where students had the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts on the subject. Overall, the event provided a platform for knowledge dissemination, empowerment, and community engagement aimed at ensuring informed collective action and positive change in the Nakore community and beyond.
